Chapter 5. -- Promise
“What do your parents usually do after work?” Katerina asked me after the silent moment.
“They talk.” I replied instantly without thinking.
“About what?”
“Everything.”
“Everything?”
“Yes, everything.”
“For example?”
“Example?”
“Like last night, what did your parents talk about?”
“My mom told my dad that Mrs. Gallo had baked a 14 inches Pizza, topped with the Chinese sausage. My dad asked where the Pizza was. And my mom said it's the dinner of the Gallos.”
“And?”
“My dad said he should prepare the fishing rod for the weekend meeting with uncle Huang. My mom said uncle Huang should get a new wife.”
“And?”
“I don't remember. What's so important?”
“Nothing important. Nothing! Just like what my mom said, Nothing!” Katerina's sudden loud voice did puzzle me.
I watched her looking down frowning, her long eyelashes covered only partial of her confusion. I tried to break the silence, but my voice was surprisingly soft:
“What did your mom say?”
“Everything.” Katerina softened her voice as well.
“Everything?”
“Yes, everything.”
“For example?”
“My mom said you are the dumbest boy in town.”
“What! Why?” I couldn't accept it and thought Katerina must be joking!
Katerina said no words but turned to me and found my eyes. When her far sharp glassy blue look reached my eyes, I lost my focus and sensed a deja vu of the moment when Ms. Blendy looked at me asking me to keep a promise.
Out of sudden Katerina raised her both hands and shouted :
“I see!!”
I responded immediately with my both hands raising up straight.
“See?” Katerina laughed just like the blooming sunflower. But this time I wasn't captured but objected seriously:
“No, it's a promise! We promised that we had to respond when either of us doing it!”
“Yeah, right, promise.” Katerina once more lowered her head with her eyes, and sat down on the grass facing the green blue Visione. I felt like to apologize, though I didn't know what I had done wrong.
I couldn't tell what I heard was from the waves or from the tree leaves, it just revealed again when my brain went blank.
“Marco,”
“Yeah?”
“Promise me,”
“I promise.”
I didn't ask what to promise, and Katerina didn't tell after all.
